How’s your family dinner conversations?
A few years ago, I decide that I needed to do something to spark our family conversations at dinner time.
Well, when you homeschool your three children and your with them 24/7 it’s hard to sit at the dinner table at night and make small talk. See I can’t exactly ask the kiddos
“What did you do at school today?”
or
“Did you learn anything exciting?”
Because I already now the answer!!
Now how am I going to have the “Clever” family dinners that I always dreamed of?????
Let me share an inside family joke…… before I had children, a naïve me told my Dad that I was going to have Beaver Cleaver kids! They would say yes Ma'am or no Ma’am and would always look and act proper. Well now that I am a mom of three children and on the rare occasion (ha ha) that they should act out, my father will KINDLY (ack ack ack..let me clear my throat) remind me of my earlier words!
For the last few years we have used these 365 desktop calendars to help start a fun (yet educational) dinner conversation. Everybody loves them and even dinner guest join can in on the fun.

But as much as much as I have loved this idea, I was looking for something new for this year. Something that’s quick, educational (always a bonus), and fun for all ages.
While I’m lookin’….
I’d love to hear if you have a creative way to ignite your family dinner conversations?

We have a jar that is filled with little slips of paper. Each paper asks a question. Each night a different person gets to pick the question of the night, but everyone has to take a turn answering it....what was the best part of your day? If you could meet one person from the past who would it be and why?...you know just random questions but boooooy do we learn a lot about each other...LOL
ReplyDeleteI've heard of people doing "high, low" each taking a turn talking about their high point of the day and their low point.
ReplyDeleteI think the desktop calendar idea is brilliant! I'll have to remember that and pull it out in a few years when my babies are old enough! :)
Hi Carrie!
ReplyDeleteI love your dinner conversation ideas....very cool!
We don't really have a routine set or ideas for converstation starters, but but I think it's an excellent idea to get creative like you do! :)
One tradition we do though, is that that we have dinner together everynight. I know some families say that they don't because they are just too busy. That makes me sad. I enjoy dinner because we are all together and can chit-chat about our day, etc. and spend time together. Although when Steve is gone flying, it is just Jeven and I.... but we still eat together as a family, just her and I :)
Have a great day Carrie and thanks for the great idea!
Love your idea Carrie! Unfortunately we don't get to eat many dinners together due to sports and work so we try to cram a couple days worth of things into about 1/2 hour, sad I know. Usually the summer when things calm down we get to eat together more often and I will keep these in mind!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and very creative idea Carrie!
ReplyDeleteKisses.
That's a great idea Carrie! I can't wait till my boys start school! I awarded you the stylish blogger award today, btw. :)

This is so fun! We sometimes play good thing bad thing. You just share a good thing and a bad thing that happened that day. Another fun game is to name 2 things that happened that day and only one is true. Everyone has to guess which one is true.

We do not really do anything planned or game like...it just happens organically, and the kids are talking. We talk a lot anyhow, so sometimes at dinner we are too busy eating instead of talking LOL! Your idea sounds great though...you are right you are in a unique situation that you are with the kids all the time...so you know what they have done all day...which is a GOOD thing.
ReplyDeleteSometimes we make up stories about what we think the other person did that day...which usually leads to impersonations that are allowed as long as they aren't mean:)
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to get family more involved in board games. We love to play clue but that is getting old. Board games area great way to have fun with the family.
