I have these ugly builder light/fans in each of my bathrooms.
While remodeling my boys’ bathroom, I thought I take the light out and replace with something nicer. Until……
I removed the cover and see a big square hole in the ceiling. How what am I suppose to do with that BIG hole?
The way I see it I have 3 options:
1. Leave it like it is. {Yuck}
2. Put a fan only cover on and rewire for a new light.
3. or my vision and Hubbies execution {see below}
My idea was to replace the light cover with the fan only cover, drill a hole in the center, and run the electrical wires out the hole to install a new light.
Both light and fan with out making another hole in the ceiling! Soooo much better!
We did the powder room too.
NOTE: If your thinking about doing this in your house, you do need to use a semi-flush light. Flush mount light would not allow the fan to circulate the air. {But you knew that!}

Great idea! I love this look! Definitely better than the other look. lol.

I love these, it looks so much more elegant.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I like the wall sconce, too, by the way!
ReplyDelete~Hi Carrie~
ReplyDeleteWow, the light looks great! I never would have thought to do that. You have the best ideas. =)
I wanted to stop by and thank you so much for your advice on my kitchen. You had a lot of great ideas which I can now ponder over. My husband liked your ideas, too! =) Thanks, Carrie!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea on the light, and it looks great!~ I live in SC too, love it!~ Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteSo clever! I love this idea!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant!!!!! This is on my list to do......I REALLY HATE my fixture (yep, looks just like your old one!). Thank you so much for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I think so many homes have those boring looking fan/lights. This is a great alternative.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, it's so much nicer! Thanks for sharing! Debbie @ Cottage Hann~Me~Downs
ReplyDeleteFantastic! I just spent a small fortune on a "pretty" fan/light combo--your idea has a very similar look for a much better price tag! I wish I thought of that!
ReplyDeleteYou have read my MIND!! We have a few of these I want to redo -- this is awesome! I'm a total dunce -- so you just took down the white original light bulb holder, kept the orginal fan cover, then put a hole in it, and wired a new light? The fan is still wired right? (I've never replaced a fan.) MUST do this!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for the wonderful comments! Sarah- Yes, pop off the light cover(photo 1), take out the light bulb and unscrew the white light bulb holder {the nut was found under the light buld}(photo 2), and unplug the fan. You'll need to purchase a fan only cover (should be solid in the center) and longer screws to extend the bracket for the new light. We have done two of the four bathrooms so far and each fan was a little different but the concept is the same. Small holes are drilled in the fan cover to allow the light bracket to be mounted on the outside. This is what holds the cover in place. On one of ours, we needed to lengthen the fan wires. In my house there are two seperate switches that control the light and the fan. The following steps I left for my husband to do (who has electrical experience). He tells me that the biggest thing is to get the screws long enough to extend beyond the cover to mount your NEW lighting hardware. I have two remaininve bathrooms that have these light/fan combo thingys. I promise to post more detailed photos in my next bathroom make-over. I hope that helps.
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I need to do that in one of my bathrooms!
ReplyDeleteI love the candle sconce you have hanging also!
I have these ugly lights in my bathroom. I ended up getting ride of them. Ugly lights ruin a nice room.
